Yorktown to be in five-team football district

   Yorktown will compete in a five-team district in football during the 2012-14 seasons as the biennial UIL reclassification and realignment was released Thursday.
   The Wildcats will compete in Class 1A, Division I with Ganado, Kendy, Shiner and Three Rivers.

   Following is the Region IV, Class 1A Division I realignment for 2012-14: 
REGION IV
District 13 — Flatonia, Holland, Thorndale, Thrall, Weimar.
District 14 — Brackettville, Center Point, Harper, Junction, Mason, Ozona.
District 15 — Ganado, Kenedy, Shiner, Three Rivers, Yorktown.
District 16 — Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco, La Villa, Monte Alto, Santa Maria.

Hard work from dusk to dawn routine for 74-year-old Yorktown cattleman

   From an early age, Alton Ray “Sonny” Seifert, knew what hard work entailed.
   Born in an upstairs bedroom of the old Davy store to Herman and Annie Seifert, Sonny left school at age 14 when his father died in order to help support his family.
   “There was no welfare and no other means of making a living. Someone had to help,” Seifert said.
   Presently, Seifert, 74, keeps busy by tending to 6,000 acres of ranch in four counties. He works long hours, seven days a week.

Goats, lambs, take center stage at Nordheim Stock Show

   “Anyone here from Eagle Ford? I’ll start with you for $100,000.”
   Auctioneer Gary Jarzombek kicked off the bidding with this tonque-in-cheek quip at the annual Nordheim FFA Stock Show and Sale held this past Saturday in the Nordheim Show Barn. While the show ring didn’t boast any beef this year, there were plenty of goats, lambs and hogs up for grabs, as well as generous buyers and supporters in attendance.
   This year’s show was dedicated to Nordheim ISD School Secretary Shirley Karnei. Karnei, a Nordheim High School graduate, is a 24-year employee with the district.

School board recognized, Kneese's contract extended to 2015 at meeting

   A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Yorktown Independent School District was held at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 in the Junior High library.
   The following members were present, Boyd Weise, Jerry Steves, H. R. Krause, Mark Niemier, Nelda Sertuche, Keary Perez and superintendent Deborah Kneese. Member Mark Weischwill was absent from the meeting.
   Others present at the meeting included Shannon Franke, Sylvia Hernandez, Trey Alexander and approximately 50 guests.
   President Weise called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed.

CNA class offered at YHS

   The new Certified Nurse Assistant class at Yorktown High School recently trained at the local EMS for their CPR requirement before they begin clinicals at Yorktown Manor Nursing and Rehab.
   Rhonda Bruns teaches the CNA course at the high school. William Potcinske taught the CPR class.

Humane Society to offset spay and neuter costs for pets

   The Yorktown/Nordheim Humane Society is offering to help offset the cost to spay and neuter dogs and cats.
   To qualify for the discount, the pet owner must be a member of the Yorktown/Nordheim Humane Society.
   Discounts will be in the form of vouchers of $20 for neuters for male dogs and $30 for female dogs and cats.
   Annual individual memberships are $10 and corporate memberships are $200 yearly.

Three seats available in May 12 city council election

   Feb. 4 is the first day to register for the city council election on May 12.
   The council members whose seats are up for election are Manuel Serrano, Ruben B. B. Garcia and Fraces Villa.
   The deadline to register is March 5. 
Minister trying to raise diabetes awareness

   When the Rev. Pete Guajardo came to Primera Iglesia Bautista in October 2011, he knew big changes were in store. One important priority was bringing diabetes education classes to the area.
   Guajardo said he learned about the classes being offered in Cuero and Yoakum, and then arranged to have them offered in Yorktown by a grant from TMF Health Quality Institute. Classes are led by Hilda Ramirez, RN, CDE of Texas Home Health.
   “Diabetes, mainly type 2 diabetes, is a big problem within our Hispanic culture, especially around here in South Texas,” Guajardo said.

DOJ gives local precinct lines approval

   It may be a while before residents of DeWitt County learn what legislative or congressional districts represent them but they can see now who their local representatives are.
   DeWitt County recently received approval from the Department of Justice for its new commissioners court, justice of the peace and election precincts boundaries.
   These boundary changes were necessary due to changes in population as a result of the 2010 census.
   Residents can view the changes in the boundaries in DeWitt County Clerk Natalie Carson’s office at the courthouse during regular business hours.

Cynthia is the daughter of Rose Marie Tam and the late Tony Tam of Yorktown and Matt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Hinds of Victoria. 
Roeder family welcomes son

   Debbie and Don Roeder of Yorktown announce the arrival of their son, Carter Jackson Roeder. He was born on Dec. 16, 2011 at 7:54 a.m. at DeTar Hospital North in Victoria.
   He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 19 inches in length.
   His sister Kaitlyn Leigh Roeder welcomed him home.
   His grandparents are Roman and Virgie Drabek of Schulenburg, and Eddie and Donna Roeder of Yorktown; his great-grandmother is Helen Crocker of Yorktown.

Diabetes classes offered at Primera Iglesia Bautista
   A diabetes-self management education class will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 at Primera Iglesia Bautista.
   The class will be titled, “Your ongoing journey with diabetes” and will cover complex concepts related to diabetes including the natural course of diabetes, the many medicine options that exist for people with diabetes today, what insulin is and how it works, long-term complications associated with diabetes and the ABCs of diabetes.
   A light supper will be provided.

   Our dear mother passed away on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012 in Victoria at the age of 86 years. We miss her and realize that we have been very blessed to have such a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
   On Feb 1, 1926, Emerence Maria was born in Yorktown to the late Kunegunda Danysh Migura and Emanuel Anton Migura. While working in San Antonio, she met her true love and future husband, Angelo Fanelli, on a blind date. Dad was stationed in San Antonio with the Army at the time.

   He was born May 30, 1921 in Runge to the late Robert and Louise Bues Sucher.
   He is survived by his daughter Sheryl and husband Denis Mueller of Cuero; son Don and wife Melanie Sucher of Victoria; grandchildren Wesley and wife Kaitie Sucher, Kyle Mueller and Alyssa Sucher; sister Ellie Schendel and sister-in-law Mary Sucher.

   Ruby Kraatz, 66, of Cuero, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. She was born in Weesatche, on May 20, 1945 to the late Alfred Kraatz and Hermina Reck Kraatz.
   She is survived by brother, Wilbert Kraatz of Weesatche; and brother in law, Raymond Weise of Arneckeville.
   She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Edgar Kraatz and Elliott Kraatz; and sister, Lillian Weise.
   A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 3 at Mission Nursing Home. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at Weesatche Cemetery.

Frieda Lee Leonhardt

   Frieda Lee Leonhardt, 84, of Runge died Jan. 30, 2012.
   She was born Oct. 22, 1927 in Dewitt County to the late Gustav and Clara Kirchner.
   She is survived by her daughter Lisa (Cecil) Jones from Runge, grandsons Steven Ray (Jennifer) Jones, Robert Christopher (Erica) Jones, Patrick Allen Jones, and Andrew Tyler Jones and seven great grandchildren.
   She is preceded in death by her parents, husband George Leonhardt, two brothers, and two sisters.

   Linda Joyce Barth, a former editor of Houston House & Home Magazine and a joyful aesthete known for her discerning eye for design, architecture and fashion, died on Jan. 21, 2012, after a long battle with cancer, at the rural home of her cousins near Angleton.
   Linda, who also worked in years past for an advertising agency in Denver and wrote for Houston’s city magazine, Houston Metropolitan, became editor of Houston House & Home in 2002.    He was born in Runge on May 28, 1945 to the late Isabel and Evangelina Sanchez Alaniz.

Seventh and eighth grade Wildcats play Ganado

   The seventh grade Wildcats played the Ganado Indians for the second time this season on Monday, Jan. 30.
   “Even though both teams had a slow start offensively, the defense for both team made the game very interesting,” said coach Bruno Mata.
   The score at the end of the first period was 3-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

   Several members of the 2011 Yorktown Wildcat football team were recently chosen for the District 15-1A Division 1, All-District Football Team.
   First-team selections were: running back and defensive secondary, Rodryck Williams, senior and inside linebacker, Cody Lubyinesky, junior.

Wildcats suffer first district loss

   The Flatonia Bulldogs used five players scoring in double figures to hand the Yorktown Wildcats a 66-51 District 30-1A loss Tuesday night.  
   The Wildcats' record fell to 16-7 overall and 2-1 in district play while Flatonia improved to 14-13 and 3-1.
   Jayden Barefield led Yorktown with 21 points.
   The Wildcats return to district action Friday at Shiner.

Wildcats roll past Runge

   Jayden Barefield scored 29 points and Rodryck Williams added 16 to lead the Yorktown Wildcats to a 62-47 non-district win over the Runge Yellowjackets on Tuesday.
   The win improved the Wildcats to 13-6 on the season while Runge fell to 9-7.
   Barefield made three 3-pointers while Williams made two.

Kitty Kats win basketball season opener

   KENEDY - The Yorktown Kitty Kats started their basketball season on a winning note Tuesday night with a 24-21 win over the Kenedy Leopards.
   Destany Mungia led the way for the Kitty Kats with 11 points.
   Kenedy won the junior varsity game.
   Yorktown returns to action Friday with varsity and JV games at Refugio.

   CORPUS CHRISTI - The Yorktown Wildcats fell to the La Villa Cardinals 35-18 in their Class 1A, Division I bi-district football game Friday night at Tuloso-Midway High School.
