One month remains until Disney’s Lion King Jr. entertains theater fans at the Cuero ISD Performing Arts Center. The Boys & Girls Club of DeWitt County are full speed head with plans to top last year’s production.

Tyesha Harrell, a sophomore at Cuero High School, has been singing and acting since the sixth grade and will be one of the signature roles in the performance as Rafiki.

A lover of all performing arts, Harrell took some time to break out of her shell.

“I’ve always loved music, but I was always a shy kid,” she recalled. “I finally learned about choir in the fifth grade and really liked it, then in sixth grade, I got more into it.”

Her choir showcased the Aristocats musical that year, and she’s been sold on performing ever since.

Cuero ISD choir director Heather Turk told Harrell of the Club’s first musical last year. In Beauty & the Beast, Harrell played Lumiere.

Harrell has also participated in the Gospel Brunch with the Boys & Girls Club and performed The Lion King with the choir recently but wanted to try out a new part after having been Nala before.

“Mostly just seeing how they interpret it,” Harrell said of what’s she’s looking forward to about the production, “and seeing how the other characters morph into their own.”
