Cuero man found hiding in floorboards after standoff

An initial search of a residence on Crestwood Drive came up empty at about 3 a.m. Wednesday. It was during a secondary search by the US Marshals SWAT Team that Joseph Brent Benoit, 33, of Cuero was found hiding underneath the floorboards of the house. Benoit had to be cut out before being arrested.

Benoit led Cuero Police Department and US Marshals on the high speed chase Tuesday afternoon that ended at his residence on Crestview Drive. When Benoit arrived at his residence he shot a fire arm several times before barricading himself inside his home. Benoit’s girlfriend was home when the chase ended and he came into the home. After about an hour law enforcement was able to get the girlfriend safely out of the house.

Multiple agencies responded to the standoff situation including Cuero Police Department, DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, Victoria County Sheriff’s Office, Victoria Police Department, Cuero Fire Department, Cuero EMS, Yorktown EMS, US Marshals, DPS and Texas Rangers.
