Historical Society saving old City Hall
By Roger Cowan
On Monday night, April 2, the Yorktown Historical Society appeared before the Yorktown City Council to accept the Old City Hall offered to them by the Council. The building, constructed in 1914, was previously home to the Yorktown Assisstance Ministries.
In their last meeting, the Historical Society discussed options for the future of the building. Some of those options included office spaces, historic item displays, or offering the auditorium upstairs for meetings and other events.
Of major concern is the cost of the possible restoration of the facility. Due to age and some lack of maintenance, there will be a litany of repairs to be considered. While the building itself is structurally sound on the outside, the majority of the interior is of wood construction and has been damaged by termites and the elements. The Historical Society will be seeking quotes for the possible restoration, as well as grants and donors to assist in covering the associated costs.
