Earning a doctorate was always the dream of Deborah Pedraza, former Cuero High School math and robotics teacher. Adding to the joy of accomplishing this goal, Pedraza walked the stage at Texas Tech University last month with her brother, Felix Vasquez, Jr. Now, she’ll be teaching full-time at Victoria College (VC), where she’s helping the school start an engineering program.

While in Cuero, Pedraza taught dual-credit classes before applying to move into higher education.

“We started teaching engineering classes,” she noted of what is now offered at VC. “We’re really hopeful to start adding more engineering classes. Students from this area would be able to do their first two years here before going off to do their last two years somewhere else.”

Near the outset of teaching in Cuero, Pedraza had a robotics class, where her students really had the chance to be creative.

“I had a group of students that had a knack for engineering,” she said. “We built a land rover drone. The whole idea was to drive it and see where it was going. You want them to be excited about technology.”
