Sheriff recovering from burns

Just before 6 p.m. last night, Oct. 23, DeWitt County Sheriff Carl Bowen was burning brush at his property in Yorktown when he tripped and fell into the fire.

According to law enforcement, Bowen managed to get himself out of the fire and call for help. He was airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio with burns to 40 percent of his body, but it was not life-threatening.

Although the time line of his recovery is not known at this time, DeWitt County Chief Deputy John Garoni said Bowen is expected to return to his duties as sheriff. Until Bowen is able to return, Chief Deputy Garoni will maintain operations of the Sheriff’s office.

“We are hoping for a speedy recovery for Carl; while the Sheriff is recovering, we will continue serving the citizens of DeWitt County,” Garoni said.
