Editor’s Note: Thirty years have already passed since Cuero High School’s last state championship in football in 1987. In honor of that historic season, The Cuero Record will have stories throughout this season with players and coaches from 1987.

A long legacy of Arroyos have made their mark in Cuero Gobbler football history. One of those was Adam Arroyo, who was an offensive and defensive tackle during the run to the 1987 state championship.

“We knew before the season, I think, that we were gonna win it all,” Arroyo stated. We’d been there twice, couldn’t pull it off.”

Summer practice started a little shaky, though, with three starters, who were also baseball stars (Rodney Pedraza, Wayne Mathis and Jason Gonzales) considering not playing.

“I don’t think they ever weren’t gonna play; they were just playing deep into summer baseball,” Arroyo said.

Once they returned, an already confident team began soaring with lofty expectations.

“We’re gonna finish it this year,” Arroyo recalled.
