Cole Payne missed the entirety of Cuero’s 2017 postseason with lingering injuries. The senior pitcher/shortstop returns along with six other starters from last season to build off their area finals appearance in which the Gobblers lost in three games to Robstown.
For head coach Phil Schwarz, this season’s team has to start with their pitchers. Other than Payne, Cuero also returns juniors Michael and Jared Barta.
“They’re not just pitchers; they’re hitters, too,” Schwarz noted.
Payne was an All-State selection last season and will enter 2018 as one of Cuero’s main three-hole hitters. Michael Barta went 8-1 as a sophomore and also plays third base. Last year’s district newcomer of the year, Jared Barta, will fill into the starting rotation, while also seeing time at first base and batting fourth.
Senior Payton Walk will fill into several different roles for the Gobblers.
“[Walk’s] a versatile player who can play a lot of different positions, right field last year, then when our third baseman got hurt, he moved to third base,” Schwarz noted. “He can play second base. He’ll also be one of our pitchers in the four or five spot.”
