Editor’s Note: Thirty years have already passed since Cuero High School’s last state championship in football in 1987. In honor of that historic season, The Cuero Record will have stories throughout this season with players and coaches from 1987.
Carlos Taylor was a senior wide receiver and strong safety in 1987 and was also on the teams in 1985 and 1986 that lost in the state championship game.
They had come so close the previous two seasons, so it was championship or bust in ‘87.
“We worked so hard every year,” Taylor recalled. “We came up short the first two years, but there was nothing that was gonna stand in our way. We were gonna do it no matter what.”
