Feb. 4 is the first day to register for the city council election on May 12.
The council members whose seats are up for election are Manuel Serrano, Ruben B. B. Garcia and Fraces Villa.

Minister trying to raise diabetes awareness

When the Rev. Pete Guajardo came to Primera Iglesia Bautista in October 2011, he knew big changes were in store. One important priority was bringing diabetes education classes to the area.
Guajardo said he learned about the classes being offered in Cuero and Yoakum, and then arranged to have them offered in Yorktown by a grant from TMF Health Quality Institute. Classes are led by Hilda Ramirez, RN, CDE of Texas Home Health.
“Diabetes, mainly type 2 diabetes, is a big problem within our Hispanic culture, especially around here in South Texas,” Guajardo said.

Dr. Robert W. Shook, retired professor of history at Victoria College, has spent 10 years peering over maps and diaries that are centuries old. In the process, he made a discovery that will change current maps of the El Camino Real de las Tejas Historical Trail, provided the National Parks Service recognizes his findings.
At the request of local historian, Larry Butler, he presented his research to members of the Yorktown Historical Museum on Thursday, Jan. 19.

A sign outside the Wildcat Cafe owned by Laura Billings welcomes oilfield and pipeline employees. Laura Billings said she feels right at home with her new restaurant customers from the oil field. Her husband has been working in the business for seven years.
Billings said her customers feel the same way, “We’re on first name basis with most of them. They like the down home atmosphere, rather than the restaurant atmosphere because most of them are away from home,” Billings said.

After an exhausting, 11-day search to find her lost dog, Hope Perez’s prayers were answered last week when she opened the door to her trailer house.

Debbie and Don Roeder of Yorktown announce the arrival of their son, Carter Jackson Roeder. He was born on Dec. 16, 2011 at 7:54 a.m. at DeTar Hospital North in Victoria.
He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 19 inches in length.
His sister Kaitlyn Leigh Roeder welcomed him home.
His grandparents are Roman and Virgie Drabek of Schulenburg, and Eddie and Donna Roeder of Yorktown; his great-grandmother is Helen Crocker of Yorktown.

Joe Baros Jr., 77, of Yorktown passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2012.
He was born Nov. 3, 1934 in Westhoff to the late Joe Baros Sr. and Frances Simecek Baros. He proudly served in the United States Army as a Specialist Fouth Class. He was honorably discharged in 1959. Joe was a retired office manager, he owned Joe’s Corner from 1978-1992. He loved to fish, play pool, and watch the Dallas Cowboys. He will greatly miss his breakfast and coffee buddies.

Sheila Ann (Lindblom) Park passed away on Dec. 16, 2011 in San Antonio. Sheila was adopted at birth by Dr. L. L. and Mrs. Esther (Wilson) Lindblom on Nov. 8, 1939 in Dallas.
Her father served as a naval officer during W.W.II and the family moved in with relatives who lived nearest his station. After the war, the Lindblom family moved to the San Antonio area.

The Flatonia Bulldogs used five players scoring in double figures to hand the Yorktown Wildcats a 66-51 District 30-1A loss Tuesday night.
The Wildcats' record fell to 16-7 overall and 2-1 in district play while Flatonia improved to 14-13 and 3-1.
Jayden Barefield led Yorktown with 21 points.
The Wildcats return to district action Friday at Shiner.

KENEDY - The Yorktown Kitty Kats started their basketball season on a winning note Tuesday night with a 24-21 win over the Kenedy Leopards.
Destany Mungia led the way for the Kitty Kats with 11 points.
Kenedy won the junior varsity game.

KENEDY - The Yorktown Kitty Kats started their basketball season on a winning note Tuesday night with a 24-21 win over the Kenedy Leopards.
Destany Mungia led the way for the Kitty Kats with 11 points.
Kenedy won the junior varsity game.
Yorktown returns to action Friday with varsity and JV games at Refugio.
Yorktown scorers: Mungia 11, Mendez 4, Naranjo 3, Penn 2, Nel 2, Leister 2.

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Yorktown Wildcats fell to the La Villa Cardinals 35-18 in their Class 1A, Division I bi-district football game Friday night at Tuloso-Midway High School.

The Yorktown Wildcats will play the La Villa Cardinals on Friday at the Tuloso-Midway Stadium with a start time of 7:30 p.m.
The pep rally for the game will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday in the Yorktown High School gym.

The Yorktown Kitty Kats will face Benavides at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Sinton in a Class 1A area playoff volleyball match.
Yorktown, the District 30-1A champion, had a bye in the bi-district round. Benavides, the runner-up in District 31-1A, defeated La Villa in the bi-district playoffs Tuesday.
