   PORT ARANSAS - The Yorktown News-View won first place for general excellence in the 2011 Texas Gulf Coast Press Association contest.
   The contest results were announced Friday during the TGCPA's annual convention.
   The News-View also won a second-place award for its "Distinctly DeWitt" visitor's guide in the special sections category, and third place in display advertising. 
   The News-View's sister paper, The Cuero Record, won two first-place awards and five awards overall.

   The Yorktown Chamber of Commerce has selected Alterations Plus Custom Sewing as the Business of The Month.
   Located at 122 E. 5th Street, the home-based business, started in 1965 and owned by W. Ceanne M. Cox, a current Chamber of Commerce Director, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. After hours appointments are gladly accepted.

Bond issue easily passes

   Yorktown School District voters gave overwhelming approval to Saturday’s $5.8 million bond proposition election.
   The election passed with 343 votes in favor of selling the bonds and 58 against.
   With this approval, the district will be able to build a new high school classroom building; add central air/heating system at the elementary school; general remodeling of the junior high school and build new public restrooms at Wildcat Stadium.

   A special bond election was held Saturday.
   The results were 343 for and 58 against the building of a new high school.
   The votes will be canvassed May 21.

   Students from Yorktown High School pursued academic excellence this spring, participating in contests sponsored by the University Interscholastic League.
   These scholars competed in the District 31-A UIL Academic Meet in March.
Speech, writing and academic events were held at Woodsboro High School.

Eichhorn had passion for serving seniors

   Joyce Eicchorn knows the concept of going above and beyond very well.
   Since being approached with her late husband Norman to establish the DeWitt County Senior Citizens program ten years ago, which included the Cuero Senior Nutrition site and Meals on Wheels, she graciously gave her time and resources to be able to provide residents of Cuero, Meyersville, Yorktown and Nordheim with a hot meal every day.

Over 100 voters cast early ballots

   Early voting ended Tuesday for the Yorktown ISD bond issue. Polls will be open Saturday, May 12, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Yorktown High School, 338 W. Main, for this election.
   The district has called a $5.8 million bond issue election and voters will be asked to vote for or against selling the bonds.
   Through Monday a little over 100 people had cast their ballots in early voting.

   The Nordheim May Fest will be held at Nordheim Shooting Club May 18-20.
   Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children.
   TTTPA Hot Rod Truck and Tractor Pull will be held at 7 p.m. on May 18-19. TMTPA Mini Rod Tractor Pull will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 19.

   DeWitt-Lavaca Special Education Co-op will present a  parent education event on Thursday, May 24. The event will be held at Lifeway Baptist Church on 403 E. Sarah St. in Cuero.

DeWitt County Retired School Personnel Association visit Victoria Educational Gardens

   The Victoria Educational Gardens provided the site for the DeWitt County Retired School Personnel meeting on April 17. Members enjoyed an informative tour of the gardens led by Helen Boatman, a Master Gardener. The group toured the butterfly area, the vegetable garden, the green houses, and the bird habitat, and then walked under the rose arbor on their way to the to the Meditation Garden.

Sales tax revenues continue to rise

   Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced that state sales tax revenue in April was $2.07 billion, up 10.9 percent compared to April 2011.
In DeWitt County, Cuero showed a 43.94 percent increase over the same period last year, Yorktown showed a 28.47 percent increase and Nordheim showed a 31.20 percent increase.
   Cuero has now received $1,112,907 sales tax rebate, which compares to $733,126 a year ago, Yorktown has now received $155,058 sales tax rebate, which compares to $120,690 a year ago and Nordheim has now received $8,035, which compares to $6,124 a year ago.

DeWitt among most active counties in Eagle Ford

   DeWitt County ranked sixth out of the 14 Eagle Ford Shale counties in numbers of wells completed in 2011, according to a study released last week by the Center for Community and Business Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio Institute for Economic Development.
   DeWitt County had 140 wells (105 gas, 35 oil) during 2011. Dimmitt County (304) produced the most wells in the Eagle Ford. Neigboring Karnes County ranked second with 272.

Two workers injured in fracking explosion

   NIXON - Two workers sustained second-degree burns early Wednesday from an explosion at a Vann Energy location near Nixon.
   According to the Gonzales County Sheriff's Office, the workers were injured during the fracturing process. "Fracking" is done by using chemically treated water to crack the shale and release natural gas.
   The GCSO said both men were airlifted to a San Antonio hospital. Their names were not released.
   Some nearby homes were evacuated for about two hours after the explosion as a precaution. 
Beeville choir performing in Goliad May 5

   The Beeville Community Chorus, under the direction of Dr. James Lee, will present its annual spring concert at Mission Espiritu Santo De Zuniga in Goliad State Park on May 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Full day of activities at Czech celebration May 20

   The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center will host a full day of activities to celebrate and to honor Czech heritage and traditions on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 20.
   The new Czech Music Museum of Texas located at the entrance to the Czech Center in the Kalich House will be open for tours. Highlighted in the museum are four separate genres of Czech music. Alpha Phi celebrates 78th birthday

   The Alpha Phi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International celebrated its 78th birthday anniversary on March 3 at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Parish Hall in Yoakum.
   The theme of the celebration was “Renewing Friendships in Alpha Phi—78 Years Young.”
   The group met at 11:30 a.m. for fellowship, conducted an initiation ceremony for two new members, and ate a salad luncheon hosted by Yoakum member, Linda Colman.

   Brandon and Crystal Lemke of Runge are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Lainey Alexis Lemke. She was born on April 24 at 12:38 p.m. at Guadalupe Regional Hospital in Seguin. She weighed six pounds, four ounces and was 19.5 inches long.

Yorktown's Smidt returns to College Finals Rodeo

During the Spring Classic Roping in Giddings on March 11, Caleb won the eight head calf roping match against No. 1 ranked PRCA calf roper, Justin Maass.
   Caleb Smidt of Yorktown, has qualified for his third and final year for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.
   Over 400 students from over 100 universities and colleges will compete in Casper this year.
   These cowboys and cowgirls have competed all year in one of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association 11 regions for a chance to participate at the CNFR.
   The top three students in each of the nine events, and top two men’s and women’s teams for the NIRA’s 11 regions qualify for the CNFR.

   Vicki Autrey Stehling passed away May 12, 2012 in Yorktown.
   She was born Oct. 15, 1959 in Sweetwater to James and Neva Autrey.
   She married David Stehling July 8, 1978. She was a registered nurse for the State of Texas.
   She is survived by her husband David Stehling of Yorktown, daughters Mandy Stehling of Westhoff and Amy Stehling of Victoria, her parents, sisters Deborah McGavock of Iredell, Kim Blaschke of Yorktown and brother Jay Autrey of Dilley.

   Apolonio Garza, formerly of Yorktown, passed away on May 1, 2012, at the age of 82.
   He was born in Yorktown on Dec. 31, 1929, to the late Audolio and Paula (Villarreal) Garza.
   He was preceded in death by brothers, Adam Garza and Cruz Garza; and sister, Edlia Guerra.
   Survivors are sisters, Elvida Garcia, Amalia Garcia, Lucia Diaz; and brother, Robert Garza.
   A Rosary was held at 7 p.m. on May 3 at Finch Funeral Chapel in Yorktown.
   Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. on May 4 at San Luis Catholic Church.

   Bernard Raymond Dlugosch went to his eternal reward on May 2, 2012.
   He was born on Aug. 9, 1922 in Cuero to Pete and Veronica Dlugosch. He married Margaret Lyssy on Jan. 28, 1942 in Cuero at St. Michaels Catholic Church. Ben was a farmer and rancher, worked in the oilfield for 30 years, and was a lifetime member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Cuero.

   Angeline B. Geyer, age 80, of Somerset passed away April 6 in San Antonio.
   She is preceded in death by her husband Edward A. Geyer, her parents, Florian and Mary (Ledwig) Guzy and brother Frank Guzy.

All YHS athletes medal at state meet

   AUSTIN - All Yorktown athletes at Satur-day’s UIL State Track and Field Champion-ships came back home with something to show for their efforts.
   Jayden Barefield defended his Class 1A 200-meter dash title with a winning time of 21.50 seconds. Earlier, he combined with Rodryck Williams,    Cody Lubyinesky and Kolbe Ybarra to take the bronze medals in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:28.97.
Saturday morning, Yorktown’s Vickie Niemeyer won the silver medal in the shot put with a mark of 39 feet, 3 inches.

Cuero Gun Club hosting benefit shoot for Wounded Warriors

   The Cuero Gun Club along with the help of several other organizations like the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office and the DeWitt County 4-H Shotgun Program will be helping to raise fund for the Wounded Warriors Project on Saturday, May 5, at the Cuero Gun Club. They will sponsor an Iron Man Shoot to raise funds for the Wounded Warriors Project.

YHS varsity cheerleaders to conduct camp July 28

   The Yorktown High School Varsity cheerleaders will be sponsoring a cheerleading mini camp on July 28.
   The one day camp will offer cheers, chants, dances, games, prizes and awards for all participants.
   This year, the one day camp will include their snacks, drinks, lunch and a mini camp T-shirt.
   Camp will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude with a program for parents and friends at 1:30 p.m. at the high school gym.

Wildcats capture area championship in Sinton

   The Area Track meet was held in Sinton on April 13.
   The Wildcats captured the Area Championship for the second year in a row.

Former Wildcat coach returns to Generals staff

   VICTORIA - The Victoria Generals announced Thursday that Calvin “Shorty” Cook will return as the team’s assistant coach for the 2012 Texas Collegiate League summer season.
   Cook, a native and current resident of Yoakum, is the head baseball coach at Hallettsville High School. Cook was hired at Hallettsville in 2007.
   Prior to Cook’s time at Hallettsville, he served as the assistant coach at Brazoswood High School in 1993, as the assistant coach at Yorktown High School from 1995-1997, and as the head coach at Yorktown from 1998-2006.

   The Yorktown high school track teams travelled to Ben Bolt for their district meet April 5.
Pettus, Falls City, Charlotte, Santa Maria, Ben Bolt, Kenedy, Woodsboro, Agua Dulce, Benavides, Port Aransas, La Villa and Yorktown partcipated in the event.

Mungia named to all-star team

   Destany LeAnn Mungia has been selected to play in the third annual Victoria College/Chick-Fil-A Area All-Star Game at the Victoria College Gym at 6 p.m. on March 28.
   Destany and 19 other area high school seniors were selected to compete in the basketball match-up.
   The 20 All-Stars will be divided into two teams for the contest.
